I stopped publicly accepting design projects about a year ago. I was tired of designing sites for shops that provided the exact same product to the exact same audience in the exact same community. And I was absolutely sick of working with people who acted like they owned my soul. “Retired” is what I called myself. I still designed for select people, though – family, friends, and really, really nice previous clients.
A few dozen websites and business card templates later, I realized that I haven’t really retired. I just went underground. Here are mock-ups of some of the stuff I’ve worked on since.
I’m working on two more sites as I type, so it doesn’t look like I’m gonna retire for real anytime soon. I’m considering publicly accepting design projects again, as it seems like a significant number of people want me back. It’s gone to the point where my previous clients are getting messages from various people on how I can be stalked/ contacted.
Hopefully I’ll be able to handle that level of stress again. For now I’m thinking of how I can set limits to who can avail of my services. Without sounding cocky.
